Wolff’s 2013 Sharpening Convention

Come Visit Wolff's SC Plant, Network, and Learn!!

Now is the time to start making your plans to attend the Wolff 2013 Sharpening Convention in Greenville, SC. The show dates are August 16th through the 18th.  This year Wolff is bringing back our old show format. Wolff went to smaller shows in 2007 and feel it’s time they got back to the larger show format that sports attendance of over 100 sharpeners and multiple vendors in the industry. During the day on Friday the 16th, Wolff will be hosting a run of plant tours and a yard sale at the Wolff plant in Spartanburg (about 17 miles from the host hotel). During this time Wolff will be doing demonstrations, you’ll have a chance to meet their family of workers, and  you can sign in for the convention on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday & Sunday will host Wolff's popular seminars and vendor room.  Both are geared toward sharpeners who specialize in sharpening barber, beauty, and grooming shears, clipper blades, and clipper repair.  Seminars will include classes on sharpening on the Ookami Gold® and Twice as Sharp® sharpening systems, flat hone sharpening, clipper blade sharpening, clipper repair, manufacturing shears, marketing your business and more. To register for the sharpening convention call Wolff Industries at 800-888-3832. The price to attend is $35 for the first person and $15 for each additional person from your shop if you register by May 15th, and $45 for the first person and $25 for each additional person from your shop if you register after that date. All registrations received by June 15th will be in entered into a special drawing where you will have a chance to win Wolff's E-Kit, a set of Wolff's Ookami® shears with a retail value of over $1320.00.

The Greenville Airport Marriott has blocked off a set of rooms for $89.00 dollars + tax per night. Contact the Marriott at 864-297-0300 to make your room reservations as soon as possible. If you will be flying in, the Greenville/Spartanburg airport code is GSP. The Marriott will provide a shuttle.

If you can come, come. The Wolff show is an excellent forum for learning and networking. You won't want to miss it.

Shark Tooth or Snake Tooth Thinner Teeth

In the December Issue of On The Edge I wrote an article on how to re-tooth thinning shears if you need to sharpen the tooth blade. In the article I ran out of room for pictures and wanted to drop a drawing in here at Jim Sharp to show what I was talking about when speaking of Shark Tooth and/or Snake Tongue/Tooth thinner teeth. In the article I said it would be best not to even try to re-sharpen these teeth. Instead I always try to replace shears with teeth like this if the customer will have it. Here's what I was talking about:

The one on the left is a sharks tooth. You'd find a tooth similar to this on the Kenchii Orca. The one on the right is the snake tounge/tooth (or v-notched) tooth. I've often referred to these teeth this way over the phone because the one on the left has that jagged look like the side od a sharks tooth and the one on the right looks like a snake tounge or it's fangs. There isn't a tool out there that will let you re-cut these notch styles, so that's why I like to replace them instead of try to "fix" them. In the article in the newsletter I showed how to cut new notches in standard teeth on a thinner with a corrugating file and talked about how to do it on the Wolff Corru-Gator.

This article was one in a series I'm doing right now. In November 2012 I wrote about how to ramp the teeth on thinners to reduce that choppy feel they can have. In the January 2013 I will write on how to deal with bent teeth. If you'd like to see a copy of On The Edge you can see a preview issue here:
